They show the volume of retail sales dropped by 1.2 per cent in April and was down by 0.9 per cent compared to a year ago. Retail sales have remained relatively strong in the context of cost-of-living pressures and higher borrowing costs. This has been linked to the strength of the labour market. So while many consumers have seen their purchasing power curtailed in recent years, there are more people at work than even before, meaning consumer spending on a cumulative basis has held up.
The value of retail sales was up by 4.1 per cent in the month and rose by 2.1 per cent in the 12 months to April, the CSO said.
