The retail prices of onions remained high despite the implementation of P250 suggested retail price by the Department of Agriculture .In a radio interview, Agriculture Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Kristine Evangelista said that the farmgate prices of the bulbs ranged between P190 and P200 but the middlemen sell the onions to the vendors at P500 per kilo.

On Monday, at the Sangandaan Market in Caloocan City, the retail price of onions was pegged at P600 per kilo.Evangelista said that the DA has coordinated with the market masters to link vendors with farmers cooperatives to source their onions at low prices.The official warned that unscrupulous traders who will be found taking advantage of the situation could be charged with profiteering and price manipulation and could face a fine of P2 million.
