The Monroe County Sheriff's Office announced new details to combat retail thefts.
Deputies gave a progress report Friday on three different details they've held at multiple stores over the past several months. Each lasted three days.
More than 25 law enforcement officials were involved, and during that time, they made 49 arrests and recovered four stolen vehicles. Deputies said those who were arrested contributed to more than $250,000 in loss to the stores. They said even with loss prevention, retail theft will eventually have a wider impact on the community.
"I said that we were at big box stores, but this problem is the same for small stores — mom and pop stores," said Sgt. David Bolton with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "What happens to the store that's on the corner in some neighborhood where there's a high concentration of poor people? That store will close.
MCSO said those committing the thefts may be connected to other crimes or may be battling addiction, and said deputies offered intervention.
