Physical surface details of mica studied on an atomicscale tuvienna NatureComms

ions on the freshly cleaved surface reported here, i.e., preferably arranged in row segments rather than randomly. With support from molecular dynamics simulations, it was concludedthat the ordering was related to water-induced correlation effects, i.e., the energy gained by the global hydration structure when having a specific geometric arrangement of the ions, rather than to repulsion between the solvated ions or electrostatic interaction with the substrate.

In conclusion, this study provides atomic resolution on the surface details of mica, a popular layered mineral in surface and interfacial science. Atomically resolved nc-AFM images after UHV cleaving reveal the intrinsic short-range ordering of its surface Kions: These preferentially arrange in short, alternating rows, in contrast to previous assumptions of random arrangements.

Natural muscovite mica single crystals [ oriented disks of grade V1, with 10 mm diameter and 0.25 mm thickness, from TedPella—see Supplementary Fig.for typical impurities] were glued on Omicron-style stainless steel sample plates with UHV-compatible epoxy glue . They were cleaved in UHV at room temperature before each experiment. Two cleaving methods were used. The first consists of using a wobble stick to apply a tangential force to a metal stud glued on top of the sample.

XPS was performed with a non-monochromatic dual-anode Mg/Al X-ray source and a hemispherical analyzer . Spectra were acquired in normal and grazing emission . Due to the insulating nature of the samples
