Supporters of the “La Grange Chicken Initiative” are not giving up in efforts to legalize hens as pets in the Village.
Back before the Village Board for the second time, Todd Van Cleave framed the issue in a historical context.“The needs and preferences of every society evolve over time,” he told the La Grange Village Board of Trustees during public comment at a meeting June 26th.
“Personally I’ve worked on more than several homes in La Grange that have what are now considered potting sheds that were originally chicken coops,” architect Tim Trumpeter said. “And they’re not just in homes on the east side of town, but in some of the largest, nicest homes on the west side.” But neighboring La Grange Park gave backyard chickens a thumbs-down in 2019 after stiff opposition from residents.
Van Cleave’s proposal would allow up to five hens on properties less than 20,000 square feet, and up to nine for properties larger than that.It would require no fewer than three for each owner, and mandate that coops would be in the backyard, no closer than 30 feet from a neighboring residence. Like the other municipalities Van Cleave cited, no roaming or flying off the host property would be permitted.
One of those trustees, Lou Gale, was open to the idea, but was also open to listening to opposing views.“I’m generally supportive of the idea, but I’d like to learn more,” he said, noting that there were “pros and cons” he wanted to examine.“I solidly support giving it a look,” she said. “We have several neighborhoods in the vicinity that have implemented this for years and there are no major issues.
