A roof was torn off an apartment building and several large trees were brought down on a home and cars from a severe storm that left terrified residents in a New South Wales town running for shelter.

The weather bureau described the intense event as a"microburst storm", while locals labelled it a"mini cyclone", when it hit Port Macquarie on Friday about 3pm.
