Two teenage giant tortoises, rescued from neglect at a roadside zoo in Oklahoma, are making a new home for themselves at Oakland Zoo.
Dr. Alex Herman, vice president of veterinary services at Oakland Zoo, checks out the new arrivals. Tortoises specifically can find themselves neglected, abused or abandoned because of their size and their long life spans. Many tortoises can live to be 120 years old, and they can reach up to 500 pounds. Families that are drawn to those cute little baby turtles will have to make arrangements for their care through a couple of human generations, and they’ll need ample space for the tortoises to roam.
