Rep. Gabe Evans, a freshman Republican state lawmaker from Weld County, is seeking to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo next November in what may be one of the most competitive congressional races in the country.
Evans, a Fort Lupton resident who just finished his first session in the state House this spring, announced his bid Wednesday morning. The former police officer is the second Republican entrant in the 2024 race, joining Scott James, a Weld County commissioner and radio host. They’re seeking to unseat Caraveo, who won the new 8th Congressional District seat last November in a narrow victory over state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer.
The primary to choose Caraveo’s next Republican opponent is set for June 2024. Kirkmeyer announced in July that she would not seek a rematch against Caraveo, who previously had served in the state House before going to Congress. In a statement, Evans — a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot — accused Democratic President Joe Biden, Caraveo and congressional Democrats of choosing “a path of decline” for America.
