The Nation Newspaper Reps adopt open ballot for election of Speaker, Deputy
The House of Representatives has retained the controversial rule which provides for the election of Presiding Officers of the House through the open ballot system.
The committee however did not make any recommendation on amendment to the section, and when order two was mentioned by the Deputy Speaker, none of the members voted to amend it. Chairman of the ad hoc committee that worked on the standing order, Iduma Igariwey, said though the House has held virtual sessions in the past, there has been a standing order of the House guiding such settings.
He added that the new standing order prevents chairmen of standing committees from co-opting members without the express permission of the Speaker.
