The Houston Chronicle’s latest project tracks how Houston’s Asian American Pacific...

This story started with a question. Many of us are familiar with the fact that Houston has one of the largest Asian American communities in the U.S. But how did Houston emerge as a national center?

We looked for people to interview in all kinds of places: reconnecting with sources from past stories, scrolling through social media, contacting community centers and visiting prominent Asian American-owned businesses. Our goal was to cover as much ethnic diversity within the Asian American Pacific Islander communities as possible, while also showcasing the diverse reasons why immigrants and their families came to Houston.

While census data is our best bet at tracking how Houston’s Asian population has grown over the years, it isn’t always exactly accurate because the Census Bureau canor double-count others. After the 1980 census, Houston’s Council of Asian-American Organizations estimated that the true number of Asian Americans living in Houston was nearly four times the size of the census count.
