Tom Cruise has reportedly been trying to get Oppenheimer or Barbie delayed to avoid competition with his new Mission: Impossible movie.

It’s a well-known fact within the film community that two widely anticipated movies are coming out on the same day: Christopher Nolan’s historical thriller, Oppenheimer, and Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy, Barbie, are both set to release on Friday, July 21, 2023. However, actor Tom Cruise reportedly has an issue with this., set to release on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. This release date is a little over a week before Barbie and Oppenheimer come out.

With the seventh Mission: Impossible movie featuring a nearly $300 million budget and getting pushed back multiple times due to COVID, it is no wonder why Tom Cruise wants an optimal release window for his film. The fact that Oppenheimer is releasing so soon after Mission: Impossible 7 might have an impact on box office numbers, especially with its IMAX screens.

Last year’s Tom Cruise film, Top Gun: Maverick, grossed $110 million out of its $1.49 billion box office run on IMAX screens. This illustrates how fans will likely want to see Cruise’s death-defying stunts on the biggest screen possible, but this summer, they won’t have a lot of time for that. Despite Cruise’s efforts, the odds that Oppenheimer would be moved this late into the game is not promising.Jonathan Sim is a film critic and filmmaker born and raised in New York City.
