The sexual assault of a 12-year-old child, cockroach infestations and a lack of access to showers and healthy food have been identified in a report into the emergency accommodation for vulnerable children in New South Wales.
According to the report, vulnerable children in emergency accommodation experienced abuse, lack of access to healthy food and low-quality housing.
"In some experiences I had cockroaches, but I had friends ... showers didn't work so they had to go somewhere and find random places to shower.""It was just me on my own around like full grown adults on drugs, homeless people, people with mental illnesses… it was disgusting."Another child known as "Sarah", who shared her story separate to the inquiry, said she was moved around so often, she missed school for nine months.
Ms Robinson noted there had already been several reviews into the foster care system, but Ms Washington said this one would be different. "Because this outsourced system, we don't control many of the levers. So we are looking at every single option we can."She said the government had already started trying to recruit more foster carers and reduced the number of children in high-cost accommodation to 427, a 16 per cent decrease since November.
