Graduate students\u0027 association calls the plan for increasing the costs of tuitions \u0022unsustainable.\u0022
U of S deputy provost Patti McDougall presented the plan this week as part of an information report to the U of S council. She explained that the university’s current funding agreement keeps the provincial government’s contribution flat through to the end of the 2024-25 academic year.for averting cuts, despite provincial revenue losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
International students will see heavier increases, as the university is raising the differential tuition they are expected to pay. Last year, international undergrads paid three times the domestic rate. International graduate students paid 1.81 times the domestic tuition rate in 2021-22. That rises next year to two times the domestic rate, with the exception of PhD students, who will see a reduction next year bringing them in line with the domestic rate.
The plan calls for increases at the maximum allowable four per cent rate for undergrads in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Tuition is to continue climbing at five per cent per year for domestic graduate students over the same period. A written report accompanying Zahan’s remarks noted the planned increases would see domestic grad students paying just under 22 per cent more tuition by 2023-2024 than they did last year.Article content
