Repeal oppressive laws as pledged, lawyers’ group tells govt

THE Home Ministry’s denial that it was backtracking on reforms is dishonest, flimsy and similar to the former Barisan Nasional government’s excuses, said Lawyers for Liberty adviser N. Surendran. Surendran said oppressive laws such as the Sedition Act, Prevention of Crime Act and the Printing Presses and Publications Act can be easily repealed in the first Parliament session in July last year but the ministry had retained them instead.
