October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and last year in Pennsylvania 104 men, women, and children were killed in domestic violence situations. The guest speaker was Stephanie Maurer, the mother of 27-year-old Kirsten Maurer who lost her life in 2008 to domestic violence.

“I heard that when she would go to work, for example, she would try to cover up a black eye,” stated Stephanie Maurer.CBS 21 asked the Executive Director of Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties, Sonya Browne, why it seems many survivors don’t seek help.Browne added, “Because you wonder why is this happening to me, what did I do to cause it, and so that’s why a lot of people do not seek services.

“We have an emergency shelter where we are able to bring families in who are displaced due to domestic violence,” explained Browne. “And we also have a program called AMEND and it’s a batterers’ intervention program because we feel like if we’re going to eradicate domestic violence then we have to touch all aspects of it.”In 2022, their numbers skyrocketed to over 2,000 hotline calls, nearly 1,500 clients, and almost 500 Protection from Abuse Orders.

According to the ACLU, 50% of U.S. cities said that domestic violence is one of the main causes of homelessness.
