As teams meet in Sweet 16 in San Antonio, a few are back from the Wildcats’ win over...
Villanova Wildcats forward Jermaine Samuels and his teammates warm up during practice at AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, Wednesday, March 23, 2022. The 2-seed Wildcats will face the 11-seed Michigan Wolverines in the Sweet Sixteen on Thursday night.SAN ANTONIO — Eli Brooks couldn’t shake the feeling of déjà vu Wednesday morning inside the AT&T Center.
Brooks, dubbed “The Professor” by third-year coach Juwan Howard, is now a fifth-year senior with 13 NCAA Tournament games under his belt. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard isn’t the most talented or fearsome Wolverine, but he is the frizzy-haired heart of Howard’s surging outfit. “I mean, this was the two schools that it came down to for me, so this is a big matchup for me,” Brooks, a Pennsylvanian who once considered ‘Nova his dream school, said Wednesday. “To get the win back in the same place that we lost the national championship game in — but I’m not going to make it personal, about myself. It’s about moving on to the next round. It just happens to be Villanova back in San Antonio.
Their games are different, as are their future NBA prospects, but Gillespie and Samuels have assumed the mantles that Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges handled so well for Villanova’s last title team. Brunson and Bridges bookended their three-year careers with national titles, a feat their spiritual successors hope to match.
