This one takes the top spot because it went 18 full innings, Jeremy Peña's leadoff homer in the 18th inning provided the only run and Luis Garcia pitched five shutout innings to end a shutout performance by eight Houston pitchers. Peña's homer was the only hit for the Astros' top three hitters in the lineup in 23 at-bats during the game.
The pitchers, naturally, dominated this game with the Astros striking out 22 while the Mariners' hurlers struck out 20.Chris Burke leaps into the crowd of teammates after his walkoff home run in the 18th inning of Game 4 of the 2005 National League Division SeriesThis was the longest MLB playoff game to date. The Astros, who trailed 6-1 entering the eighth inning before a Lance Berkman grand slam, were one out away from seeing the Braves force a decisive Game 5 in Atlanta.
Needing a win to force a Game 7 with the virtually unhittable Mike Scott on the mound, the Astros took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Bob Knepper took that lead into the ninth but he and closer Dave Smith couldn't hold it as the Mets rallied to tie the score. New York took the lead in the 14th only to see the Astros' Billy Hatcher keep the game going with a homer off the left-field foul pole. The Mets then scored three times in the 16th. The Astros responded with two runs, but Jesse Orosco struck out Kevin Bass with the tying and go-ahead runs on base to clinch the pennant for the Mets.
