Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Sept. 15 and ends at sundown on Sept. 17. There are a variety of reasons for Jews to hear the blowing of a shofar, a ram’s horn, on Rosh Hashana. Reasons include that it’s a wake-up call to change behaviors from the negative to the positive and a call to return to God. This year, the shofar isn’t blown on Sept. 16 since it is Shabbat. It will be blown instead on Sept. 17, the second day of Rosh Hashana.
