The environmental watchdog investigating the collapse of Australia’s largest plastic bag recycling program has charged the operators of REDcycle for failing to provide information about the locations of warehouses that secretly stockpiled hundreds of millions of bags.
The EPA said the company could pay the maximum fine of more than $165,000 if found guilty, and further charges for breaching environmental law could be laid. Earlier this month, plastic bags were being stored at sites in the Melbourne suburbs of Tottenham, Williamstown North, Truganina, West Footscray, Campbellfield and Tullamarine.REDcycle, a Melbourne-based company, claimed it collected up to 5 million plastic items a day from public drop-off points at nearly 2000 supermarkets across the country, and delivered them to other companies, where they were used as ingredients in concrete, asphalt, street furniture, bollards and shopping trolleys.
