As Labor talks tough on competition policy and prepares to crack down on firms using market power to dud consumers, one minister indicated Qantas was a special case.
Qantas argues, if approved, the extra flights sought by Qatar would have doubled the capacity of the state-subsidised airline at a time when the other carriers were seeking to return to 100 per cent of pre-pandemic capacity.
Qantas indicated in June that international flight capacity would not catch up to surging demand until 2028, sparking Jarden analysts to suggest the shortfall of planes could deliver as much as 75 per cent higher earnings from Qantas’s boom-bust international division.Mr Jones said the COVID-19 pandemic had been instructive about the challenges facing Qantas and the latest financial results were not bad.
“Having a national airline that occasionally post a profit is not a bad news story. It’s actually a good news story.”
