The Texas Department of State Health Services issued a recall for all oysters harvested in a southeastern area of Galveston Bay after several dozen people...
Oyster harvesting in the southeastern region of the bay has stopped after few dozen people got sick from the shellfish.
In this Tuesday Dec. 2, 2014 photo, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Travis Fountain checks a sack of oysters aboard an oyster boat to make sure they are legal, in East Galveston Bay, Texas. State officials have recommended parts of Galveston Bay be closed to oyster harvesting amid concerns over immature mollusks being removed and reefs still recovering from 2008’s Hurricane Ike.
All shucked and in-the-shell oysters harvested from the waters of the TX 1 region of Galveston Bay from Nov. 17 to Dec. 7 are included in the recall. DSHS shut down that area, which encompasses East Bay, for oyster harvesting on Dec. 8 after receiving reports of sick consumers from health departments in Southeast Texas and Florida.
DSHS says consumers who purchased oysters since Nov. 17 should check the packaging to see if they were harvested in the TX 1 region, and restaurants are encouraged to contact their distributors for information on the source of their oysters. Oysters from the TX 1 region should be thrown out. The department is testing water samples to investigate the cause of illness and determine when harvesting may resume. A release from DSHS says no other seafood species from that region are affected.
