Australia's peak sporting bodies have penned an open letter to their fans outlining their endorsement of the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
Executives, former players, and leaders from 21 sporting codes came together in Melbourne and Sydney on Friday to confirm their endorsement after months of organisations gradually revealing their support.
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo, AFL boss Gillion McLachlan, Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley and No Limit CEO George Rose were all in attendance representing their organisations. “We thank you for coming together as sports to represent a shared vision for a reconciled Australia I think we all know if we think hard about it that recognising first peoples through a voice is a simple ask.
Mr Albanese is looking to recruit some of Australia’s premier Indigenous athletes including NBA star Patty Mills, Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman, NRL star Jonathon Thurston, AFL legend Adam Goodes and tennis stars Evonne Goolagong-Cawley and Ash Barty to front the Yes campaign. “I seriously think that sporting codes should absolutely stay out of politics, especially when they aren’t across the detail , they don’t know what the circumstances are for a lot of Aboriginal people on the ground,” she said.“To me, it’s like a huge virtue signalling exercise; it’s like the big massive tick in the box of their reconciliation action plan because it’s been suggested by the government this is the only way forward. But sports should stay the hell out of politics.
