In Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Jon Gray one year and Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney, the next, Davis understood his baseball people were bringing him talent. In Bruce Bochy, he knew he was getting a manager with the kind of credentials the Rangers have never had. But he never pretended to evaluate the talent; he focused on what he calls character. Scouts call it “makeup.”
“Yeah, it was easy,” he said with a rueful laugh if there is such a thing. “We were going to do this every year.” “I don’t like to lose,” he said ahead of a 4-2 rain-shortened, um, loss Wednesday. “The last six years have been difficult. I’m just being very honest. We weren’t growing major league talent like we should have.”
