A whale-watching voyage yields photographs and video of North Pacific right whale, a species nearing extinction.
The rarest of all large whales swam through the shallow waters of Monterey Bay last weekend, a sight greeted with elation and awe.
It got its name because whalers identified it as the “right” whale to kill, because of its thick blubber and plentiful oil. She expected to spot gray whales and humpback whales, which are starting their northbound migration from their winter breeding grounds in the shallow lagoons and bays of Mexico. She also hoped to see killer whales, or orcas, which were also recently reported.
She approached a bit closer, and saw another important clue: white, raised and rough patches of skin on its head, called callosities.
