The Rangers’ half-billion dollar middle infield has struggled against Houston, combining for one RBI as a pivotal Game 6 approaches.
Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager and second baseman Marcus Semien wait for a pitching change after Will Smith gave up a run on a single by Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez during the seventh inning in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Arlington.Email AddressThe last thing Baker wanted to do Saturday was to say something that might wake up Marcus Semien and Corey Seager, “two of the best dudes in the league,” as he put it.
Now, you can fault Jose Leclerc for blowing another save in Friday’s epic loss, and you’d get no argument here. For that matter, Adolis García deserves his share of blame for losing his cool,Just the same, it’s hard to criticize Adolis, who’s holding up his end as a member of the Rangers’ big three.Adolis’ slash line of .278/.350/.611/.961 in the ALCS puts him in company with the Astros’ big three of Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez.
On the other hand, Seager, who went into the ALCS on a tear, has cooled off to .227/.227/.409/.636 against Houston, which is practically Ruthian compared with Semien’s .143/.182/.143/.325.it’s remarkable that the Rangers came as close as they did Friday to going up 3-2 in the series. In their first two at-bats Friday, Semien and Seager saw a total of five pitches. The results: three popups and a can of corn to left. They didn’t get any better as the game wore on, either. Finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Sure, everyone knows both hitters are aggressive; Seager, in particular. And when it works, it’s all good. But when you’re not taxing the opposing pitcher, and you can’t get the ball out of the infield, to boot, it’s a problem. Especially Friday, when the superstars wasted a pretty good game at the plate by Mitch Garver and Jonah Heim, who, in a first, found themselves at the bottom of the order.Bruce Bochy has experimented with his card in the playoffs, and for good reason.
