King, 28, has a 2.08 ERA and a 11-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 17.1 innings pitched for Round Rock. He appeared in 29 games for Texas in 2022 and had a 4.03 ERA in 51.1 innings pitched. He has a career 4.01 ERA in 107.2 major league innings. He started two games for Round Rock, but pitched no more than 2.1 innings in either outing.
“With John, he gives us length,” Bochy said. “We had to put Dane Dunning in the rotation and we lost a long guy. That’s what [King] has been doing down in Triple A, had him stretched out. That guy is a guy that protects the starters and the bullpen, and we saw what a great job Dane did. John’s got experience up here, he’s pitched well up here and he’s earned his promotion.”
Thursday’s transaction gives the Rangers four left-handed pitchers in their bullpen — King, Cole Ragans, Brock Burke and Will Smith — and four right-handed pitchers in Jonathan Hernandez, Jose Leclerc, Yerry Rodriguez and Josh Sborz. Dunning, a RHP, had been the Rangers’ long relief man out of the bullpen to begin the season,Shortstop Corey Seager was officially sent to Double-A Frisco for a rehab assignment on Thursday, as well.
