It's time to put our money where our priority is -- with schools, writes rweingarten for usatodayopinion.
Everyone, from educators to parents to pediatricians to civil rights leaders, has decried the toll that the virus has taken on students and recognized that additional funding is necessary to reopen safely.
But beyond learning loss, what teachers are most concerned about is how kids are doing personally — who is feeling is isolated and lonely, who is experiencing trauma from losing loved ones or food insecurity at home. And they’re concerned because they know that the vast majority of students benefit from in-person engagement and socialization with peers and teachers and that they face negative affects without it.
Teachers and parents know that another year of purely remote learning would be catastrophic. It’s impossible for parents to look after kids and do their jobs — and many of those parents are teachers themselves. For everyone’s sake — particularly for our children and for the health of the economy — school buildings need to reopen in the fall: gradually, carefully, responsibly and, most importantly, safely. No one can guarantee complete safety, but we can and must mitigate risk.
