COLOMBO: Rambut Milton Pereira disikat dengan kemas namun mukanya cengkung dan susuk badannya pula kurus kering dan kelihatan lemah.“Kami makan sekali sahaja dan kemudian tak makan lagi,” katanya dalam temubual di luar rumahnya di Pulau Slave, Colombo.

Dengan mempunyai enam orang anak, lelaki berusia 74 tahun itu berkata, sejak beberapa minggu lalu, dia hanya mampu membeli ikan sekali sekala, yang dipotong kecil untuk dikongsikan bersama keluarganya. Anak lelaki Milton iaitu BG Rajitkumar yang bekerja sebagai buruh dilaporkan menganggur selama sebulan.

Tinjauan harga sayuran di beberapa premis mendapati penduduk terpaksa membayar 1,000 rupee untuk sekilo labu, dua kali ganda berbanding harga sayuran itu tiga bulan lalu. Menurut Program Makanan Sedunia, kira-kira lima juta orang atau 22 peratus penduduk negara itu kini memerlukan bantuan makanan. Beberapa peniaga pasar borong sayuran memaklumkan perniagaan mereka merosot sehingga menyusut lebih separuh sejak Mac lalu.“Malah, sayur yang tidak dijual akan dibuang dan ramai orang miskin membawa pulang sayuran tersebut setiap hari selepas pasar ditutup,” katanya.“Kadang kala saya menjual sayur kepada orang miskin dengan harga lebih murah bagi mengelak pembaziran makanan dan meraih sedikit keuntungan,” katanya.
