The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disturbance in the Atlantic for the first time since January:
This type of system doesn't get its energy entirely from warm waters or from the jet stream, but instead, both.
If winds aloft aren't strong enough to simply blow away the low-pressure center but instead help ventilate the storm, encouraging rising air and thunderstorms, the core of the low-pressure circulation will warm, first in the lower levels. Subtropical cyclones typically are associated with upper-level lows and have colder temperatures aloft, whereas tropical cyclones are completely warm-core, and upper-level high-pressure systems overhead help facilitate their intensification.
While 2022 did not have any storms that remained a subtropical cyclone, Nicole did originate as a subtropical system. In 2021, Ana, Teresa and Wanda were subtropical through at least part of their lifespans – each of which were in the open Atlantic.
