The National Weather Service says the rain will likely just be a 'nuisance event'
Make your contribution now and help Gothamist thrive in 2023.New Yorkers can expect a soggy commute and some minor street flooding as bands of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms move through the area Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
“Overall, it looks like it’s generally going to be minor, urban, poor-drainage-type flooding, so some street flooding and maybe some underpasses having some standing water,” said NWS meteorologist Nelson Vaz. “We’re not looking at anything that’s really life-threatening type of flooding.” The bigger rain clouds are expected to push east by mid-morning, though New York City could expect some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.“Overall, not an overly concerning event,” Vaz said. “ I think it’s going to be more of a nuisance event.”
The National Weather Service has a small craft advisory in place until Saturday along New York’s Atlantic coastline, as well as Long Island Sound. Wave heights are expected to be 3-5 feet and there's a rip current warning in effect throughout Friday, meaning people should steer clear of the surf. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be much drier, with just a slight chance of Saturday evening thunderstorms before skies clear up for a sun-filled Sunday.
