Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky of Bris Avrohom lights a menorah at The Mills in Jersey Garden mall in Elizabeth, one of 140 he will light this Hanakuh.

Rabbi Avery Kanelsky checks the menorah at the administration building. Kanelsky of Bris Avrohom lights three different menorahs at Newark Liberty Airport in Newark, N.J. December 19, 2022The only way to defeat darkness is light. That’s what Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky, of Bris Avrohom, is doing this Hanukkah as he lights 140 menorahs placed all around New Jersey.

“We are spreading the light because the whole idea is to take away the darkness. We are in such a situation that we have a lot of dark in the world and our job is to make a better world,” said Kanelsky. Kanelsky started lighting the menorahs two weeks ago and will finish on the last day of Hanukkah Dec. 26 at the Elizabeth police station.

Kanelsky has five rabbis that make up more than a dozen helpers but Shterney Kanelsky, the Rabbi’s wife, is the organizational force that makes it run and work. “She is the boss,” declared Rabbi Kanelsky.“This is a great opportunity for us to help celebrate the season, a wonderful reflection of our community and participate with the community in celebrations, and share love and joy for the holiday season,” said James Gill Sr., General Manager Newark Airport.

Sunday’s menorah lighting at The Mills at Jersey Gardens mall in Elizabeth had dozens of children in attendance with balloon animals being made, entertainment, and singing while the menorah was lit. “Hanukkah geld, the custom is to give the children a dollar bill or some kind of money in honor of Hanukkah, it is their gift of Hanukkah, it is customary to give to every single child,” said Kanelsky.
