Folks living in the Northern Hemisphere say the moon looks upside down in Australia. Is this true?
Whether the moon looks upside down or right side up in Australia really depends on your perspective.
For your average Australian or New Zealander, or someone from any other country in the Southern Hemisphere, the moon looks right side up.This is because the moon orbits the Earth roughly on its Equator, so to people further up on either hemisphere, the moon would never appear overhead. The viewer would perceive the side closest to the ground as the"bottom".
Due to the fact that a person standing on the north pole would be upside down from someone standing on the south pole, their perspective of the moon would be flipped as well. The Moon rises and sets in an arc directly overhead, so either end could be facing the ground, depending on the time. So for folks living here, we do not see a top and bottom for the moon.
