Is it true that stainless steel still can rust?

Stainless steel is an alloy and contains various other elements like chromium, copper, molybdenum, niobium and nitrogen that lend its ability to resist corrosion.

Chromium is most commonly associated with this ability as it forms a passive chromium oxide layer above the surface when exposed to oxygen. Typically, most stainless steel contains anywhere from 10-16% of the element and its oxide layer can even self-heal under the right conditions. Corrosion and rust, however, can still happen when the very thin oxide layer is damaged from exposure to various chemicals or mechanical abrasions which causes the bare metal to be exposed.
