The U.S. senator's death leaves Gov. Gavin Newsom in a tough spot.
Even amid the outpourings of praise for U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein Friday in the wake of her death, the question looming for many was who — if anyone — Gov. Gavin Newsom would appoint to fill out her term until voters can choose a replacement in 2024.
Newsom previously pledged to appoint a Black woman to the job with the understanding that that person would not run for election. That move may have come because the governor took significant heat in 2020 when he named Alex Padilla, D-California, to replace Kamala Harris, the Senate’s only Black woman, upon her election as vice president.
Lee previously took strong exception to Newsom’s announcement that he would not appoint her if Feinstein were to die before her term expired because he did not want to influence the upcoming election. Lee said Newsom’s decision to appoint a Black woman caretaker was “insulting to countless Black women,” who she said have repeatedly brought victory to the Democratic party.
Police on lookout for vehicle wanted in Marina hit-and-run The two victims suffered life-threatening injuries and were still recovering as of Tuesday, police said. “Obviously, Governor Newsom boxed himself into a position,” said Bill Barnes, a longtime San Francisco Democratic political operative. The names of several prominent female political figures from around the state who theoretically could fit the bill have circulated wide. However, it’s unknown whether Newsom has approached them or whether they would be interested.
