An increase in technical issues has seen some Queenslanders upgraded from provisional to open licences despite not being old enough or having served the correct provisional period.
Queensland ’s Transport Department will spend $8 million investigating a replacement for its ageing licensing system after multiple failures, including the upgrading of unqualified P-platers to open licences . The Transport Registration and Integrated Licensing System , first used by the department in 1993, issues more than four million licences and almost six million registrations annually.
Transport Minister Bart Mellish says Queenslanders deserve a 21st-century solution to problems with the state’s licensing system.But an increase in technical issues has seen some Queenslanders upgraded from provisional to open licences despite not being old enough or having served the correct provisional period.The issue stems back to 2013, when minimum age requirements for P1, P2 and open licences were introduced by the Newman government.
