More severe storms bringing heavy rain are set to hit Queensland as parts of the north-west brace for floodwaters to peak. 9News

The Bureau of Meteorology warned "extensive" storm activity is moving towards Brisbane and Gold Coast after heavy rain lashed the northwest.

The bureau said the severe storms will impact Brisbane CBD, Beenleigh, Logan, Strathpine, Cleveland, Redcliffe and Kallangur this afternoon. It comes as residents of Burketown in northwest Queensland experience major flooding on the Gregory River. Yesterday, police said it was too late for Burketown residents to leave their homes as flooding intensified.Queensland Police urged residents in Burketown to evacuate yesterday, saying the daylight hours were the last chance too.
