Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll has announced her resignation, citing political debate and internal tensions. Her decision comes amid speculation about her future and the need for leadership change. Carroll denies being a scapegoat and highlights the good work of the police.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll has announced she will leave the role on March 1. Appointed by the Labor government in 2019, Carroll made her intentions known on Tuesday, amid a long-running political debate over crime and internal tensions over her leadership. Carroll’s five-year contract was due to end or be renewed in July, and there had been speculation she would not seek an extension.

On Monday night, she confirmed she was “seriously considering” her options, but had yet to officially talk to Police Minister Mark Ryan. Addressing media at police headquarters in Brisbane on Tuesday morning, Carroll said she had, following discussions with her husband, Michael, and children, decided to leave early to allow for leadership change. Carroll said the “heightened speculation and chatter” about her future was distracting for the Queensland Police Service. Carroll rejected suggestions she would be made a scapegoat for problems in the service, saying police were doing good work and further reforms were being implemented
