Queensland has topped CommSec’s State of the States report for the first time in its 13-year history.

Nikki Giumelli, the co-owner of Cairns jet boating business Bad Fishy, says the reopening of flights and state borders after COVID-19 reminded travellers that the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef has “what the world wants” as the region looks to recapture international travellers.

“We had a pretty good recovery in 2022, which was influenced by a few different factors, from pent-up demand, an increase in aviation and a desire for people to get out and explore beautiful destinations like ours,” Ms Giumelli said.Queensland had the strongest relative population growth, with a 2 per cent annual growth rate, 30 per cent higher than the decade average, according to CommSec.

Ms Giumelli said international travellers tended to be independent or in small groups, coming from the UK, Europe and United States, with a sprinkle from Japan.CommSec chief economist Craig James said Queensland’s diversified economy had traditionally prevented it from taking out the top ranking. “Queensland has a strong report card, ranking first on relative population growth and relative unemployment, and is second ranked on three of the other eight economic indicators.
