A new mechanism that gives rise to superconductivity in a material where the speed of electrons is almost zero has been discovered by scientists at The University of Texas at Dallas and their partners at The Ohio State University. This breakthrough could pave the way for the development of novel sup

The results of their study, which was recently published in the journal, describe a novel approach to calculate electron speed. This study also represents the first instance where quantum geometry has been recognized as the primary contributing mechanism to superconductivity in any material.. Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged periodically in a honeycomb pattern. In twisted bilayer graphene, two sheets of graphene are stacked on top of one another with a slight angular twist.

The new study provides significant insights into how superconductivity can arise in materials with nearly “frozen” electrons. The experimental measurements and theoretical analyses demonstrated that the dominant contribution to superconductivity is instead from quantum geometry, which is analogous to ordinary geometry but originates from quantum many-body physics.

“A high-temperature superconductor, operating at room temperature, has long been the holy grail of condensed matter and materials physics,” Xu said. “If it could be developed, our lives and society would be completely reshaped because, for example, we could transport electricity much more efficiently and run maglev trains much less expensively.”
