A new QR code-based immigration clearance system is being introduced at KLIA to reduce congestion and improve efficiency.

PUTRAJAYA: A QR code-based immigration clearance system at 40 designated lanes at Kuala Lumpur International Airport ( KLIA ) will be introduced this month exclusively for Malaysian citizens. Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the system is one of the proposed solutions to address congestion issues often occurring at entry points of the country, including KLIA , especially during peak hours and holidays.

He said these 40 designated lanes will be located in the arrival and departure areas of KLIA Terminal 1 and 2. 'Among the advantages of immigration clearance using QR codes is that the clearance time takes only 5 to 7 seconds compared to 15 to 25 seconds using conventional autogate methods. 'It can further reduce congestion at entry points, especially during peak hours, and enhance the safety and efficiency of services through the use of the latest technology, as well as reducing leakages,' he said in a statement today. Saifuddin said that through this QR code system, travelers no longer need to present their passports during immigration clearance. However, he said, they are required to always carry their passports throughout their journey. It is clarified that although the QR code-based immigration clearance system has been introduced, manual counters and conventional autogate systems will continue to be available and can still be used as usual. 'Currently, immigration clearance at KLIA still relies on manual counters and autogate systems with limited capacity. 'Although autogates have been introduced to expedite immigration clearance, the efficiency of autogates remains a major issue, causing manual counters to remain the preferred option,' he said. - UTUSA
