Quarterback Gavin Wimsatt and the Rutgers offense started off hot against Temple, then did just enough to defeat the Owls.
The first quarter sequence would wind up being one of the few highlights on the night for Wimsatt and the Rutgers offense, but thanks to an elite defense that picked off two passes and contained Temple for most of the night, they did not have to do much. The Scarlet Knights eventually skated to a 36-7 win over the Owls at SHI Stadium on Saturday, though the game did get too close for comfort at the start of the fourth quarter.
Wimsatt played his part, going a second consecutive game without an interception, a great sign given how much he struggled with turning the ball overAnd while he finished with a respectable line — 199 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-22 passing — it could have been the best game of his career if he carried on his early momentum.
That progress came to a screeching halt from there, an ominous pattern beginning to emerge through the first two games underAfter scoring on three straight drives then letting the clock run out on the first half, Rutgers punted on three consecutive drives to start the second half, gaining just two first downs in the process.
