Senator Budget McKenzie has issued a warning to Qantas bosses about the “swag of questions” on notice after claiming the company brought the “wrong group of people” to the Senate inquiry. A parliamentary inquiry is investigating the government's decision to block extra Qatar Airways flights from coming into Australia. Ms McKenzie questioned Qantas chairman Richard Goyder and CEO Vanessa Hudson about why the company did not bring any members of its government relations team. “I do think it beggar’s belief that a company of your sophistication and muscle has come here today with precisely the wrong group of people to answer Senators’ questions about the relation between Qantas Group and this government,” she said during the inquiry. Ms McKenzie warned there will be a “swag of questions” on notice for Qantas’ government relations team. “If one out of the seven is on holidays I would hope that Qantas Group would show this committee the respect that it needs to and make sure those questions are answered.” She added the inquiry is a “good opportunity” for Qantas to repair its reputation.

‘Fiery exchange’: Qantas’ leaders face Senate bilateral air services inquiry‘Fiery exchange’: Qantas’ leaders face Senate bilateral air services inquirySky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd says Qantas’ appearance at the Senate inquiry on Wednesday “didn’t start well”. The bilateral air services inquiry was headlined by the appearance of Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson and Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder. Senate Chair Bridget McKenzie was clearly upset Qantas did not provide a detailed submission when other airlines, including Virgin and Rex, did. Mr Goyder said he had never met with any member of the parliament about the Qatar Airways application for additional flights. Ms McKenzie asked Mr Goyder about the percentage of Qantas’ former CEO Alan Joyce’s bonus that was withheld – Qantas then had to take questions on notice, which “frustrated” Ms McKenzie, according to Mr Boyd. The inquiry included a fiery exchange between Labor Senator Tony Sheldon and Mr Goyder over the illegal sacking of ground staff during the pandemic.

‘Level of disrespect’: Qantas Chair and CEO grilled in Senate inquiry‘Level of disrespect’: Qantas Chair and CEO grilled in Senate inquirySenator Bridget McKenzie has slammed the Qantas CEO and Chair for their “level of disrespect” during a Senate inquiry after the airline representatives were grilled over their support for the ‘Yes’ campaign. The Qantas CEO couldn’t recollect the exact date that the company agreed to support the Voice to Parliament ‘Yes’ campaign. “This is quite incredible, this is the whole quid-pro-quo and no one came prepared to answer questions – what a surprise,” Ms McKenzie said. Former Qantas boss Alan Joyce unveiled the planes with the Yes23 campaign logo at Sydney Airport in August alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. It was revealed in the Senate inquiry that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s attendance at the company’s ‘Yes’ campaign launch was not reported to the Qantas board prior to the event.
