The Oak Ridge Boys have roots in the 1940s, and the current lineup dates back a half...
Dave has relationships with some new, younger songwriters in Nashville, so that brought a nice mixture, a nice balance. Even those songs had a down-home kind of feel. There’s not much instrumentation. He wanted to focus on the four voices. The most important thing was the songs, which are all inspirational in nature. They’re meant to give hope during difficult times. We got to the studio in the morning. I say morning, it was about noon. Dave doesn’t like to start before noon, and I don’t either.
Q: How does the process work for the four of you? I imagine there’s not a lot of bickering about whose voice goes where on any given song.Well, you know, we’ve been doing this 50 years. I think we know each other just a little bit. There’s a special relationship between the four of us. We’re closer than brothers in a lot of ways. Each guy is different. Each guy brings something different to the table. That’s part of our appeal. We learned a long time ago, we need each other.
Q: You brought up the “ooom-papa-mow-mow” thing. Sorry if you’ve been asked this thousands of times. But was that an improvisation? Was it written into the song? That song was written by Dallas Frazier, who passed away last year. And there’s a great story before I get to your question, though it gets to your question. I believe he was coming home from a recording session in east Nashville. He passed a street sign for Elvira Street and pulled over and wrote “my heart’s on fire for Elvira.
Q: I’m sure you’ve also been asked this time and again. … Was adolescence a weird time when the voice dropped? Because I assume the drop wasn’t like other drops.Well, believe it or not, the first singing I ever did was as a boy soprano. That’s a fact. I was about 6 years old when I started singing in church, in Sunday school. I don’t remember the song I sang, but I can still picture that experience in my mind, me in front of the congregation.
Q: You all sang “Amazing Grace” for President George H.W. Bush’s funeral. Is there a story behind getting asked to do that? There is. We first met George Bush when he was vice president and Ronald Reagan was president at the time. Reagan invited the Oak Ridge Boys to sing at the Congressional barbecue on that lawn at the White House. I don’t know if they do that every year. But they do it from time to time. And we were on the stage, you could see all the green grass. It was a special day.
