Sophia Mathur has fought against climate change since childhood. With COP29 approaching and after a climate court win, she spoke to Kids News.
Climate activist Sophia Mathur, 17, has been striking for climate change and drawing attention to climate issues since she was eight. Here she poses in front of a large building mural in her hometown of Sudbury, Ontario. Canada to join the Fridays for FutureMost recently, on Oct. 17, she and a group of other youth had a major climate win in the Ontario courts.
So was a lot of anticipation for it and I was initially very confused about the decision, but now looking at it, I’m really, really happy. Obviously it means that we’re going to have more court dates and more to go, but it’s not like that wasn't expected so it’s giving me a lot of faith in this case, and I’m glad that this decision is getting the attention that it deserves. This could really define the rest of my year and like the rest of my activism career.
Sophia has attended COP conferences in the past. Pictured here on the left at COP27 in Egypt and on the right, at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland. I hope to see more followup with the promises and the policies that they commit to.
