A self-described “antique streetwear stylist”, Dirk Fourie’s passion for collecting vintage threads was sparked by a book of photos of 1920s Aussie riff-raff.
People tend to do a double-take when they see Dirk Fourie walking down the street. He’s wearing something radical – a suit.
“Those people in the book were not being dolled up for a photo, they were pulled off the street. I like to call it my bible of menswear. However, Fourie found that good quality used 1920s suits were hard to find – so he switched to 1940s and ’50s styles. It was made by the Western Costume Company – which still exists – in North Hollywood, California, and worn by actor Robert Rockwell inFourie bought it online for $300 from a New York state vintage clothing shop. An inside label has Rockwell’s name and chest size – 41 inches., which is on this weekend at Abbotsford Convent.
The suit was “very special”, she said, so its price would be high-end at $400 – but the average price of clothes on sale would be $30 to $40. There will be 60 racks of clothes – up from 48 racks last year – taking up twice the floor space as 2023.
