Deputy Home Minister Azis Jamman says being born in Malaysia does not automatically guarantee Malaysian citizenship.
KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya today passed the buck for stateless children to parents whose marriages have not been registered, saying the issue is for them to solve, not the government.
“The ministry, through the National Registration Department , only determines if a person is a citizen or not based on the status of their parents’ marriage and citizenship,” Azis, who is deputy home minister, said. Azis was referring to Article 15A of the Federal Constitution, which allows the government to register any person under the age of 21 as a Malaysian citizen if they fulfil the set criteria.Azis added that if a child’s mother is not a Malaysian, and her marriage to a local man is not registered, an application for citizenship for the child can still be made under Article 15A.
Ngeh also asked why the government was “unwilling” to register such children as Malaysians, saying they should not be “left aside”.“But as I said in my answer, this burden falls on the shoulders of parents, not the government.
