A popular beach in Sydney’s east has closed for repairs, with public access restricted for three months. 7NEWS
Work began on Monday to widen the timber stairs leading to and from Little Bay Beach, 17km from Sydney CBD.
The beach will be closed while work takes place from 7am to 4pm on weekdays, but will reopen on weekends and public holidays, according to a sign posted by Randwick City Council.“Randwick Council is widening the timber stairs used to access Little Bay Beach,” the sign read. “The works will make it easier for people to pass each other on the stairs, particularly in summer when thousands of people visit the beach.Access to Little Bay Beach is restricted for three months amid repair work. The main access point to the beach is a single set of currently steep, narrow timber stairs — which makes public access difficult, especially during summer for the thousands of people carrying loads of beach gear.
Council contractors will use existing footings and new timber treads to create a wider staircase to accommodate more visitors, Randwick City Council said. The work is scheduled to take about 12 weeks to 14 weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions. Little Bay Beach, a “secret” beach popular among Sydney locals, is well protected from large coastal swells, creating ideal conditions for swimmers and snorkelers.
