Proton , a prominent Malaysian automotive manufacturer, has initiated construction on its inaugural dedicated electric vehicle (EV) production facility. This marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind in Malaysia. The ambitious project, involving an investment of RM82 million, is strategically positioned to cater to both domestic and export markets. The initial phase of construction is projected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.
Upon completion, this phase will boast an annual production capacity of up to 20,000 units. Proton has officially confirmed that the debut model rolling off the assembly line at this new plant will be the Proton e.MAS 7, a fully electric SUV. The plant's production lineup will extend beyond the e.MAS 7, encompassing a range of other New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) underpinned by Proton's Global Modular Architecture (GMA). Proton anticipates that this new facility will generate employment opportunities for over 200 individuals, with a particular focus on driving domestic EV industrialization and cultivating technical expertise within the sector. This projection does not even account for the indirect job creation stemming from the supply chain, particularly within the vendor community situated at the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV). In anticipation of a surge in EV demand in the foreseeable future, Proton has laid the groundwork for a potential expansion of the production plant.
