Hundreds of protesters marched and gathered outside a police station in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Wednesday after footage was released showing an officer fatally shooting a black man earlier this month.
Demonstrators crowded together and chanted"Black lives matter!" outside the Grand Rapids Police Department after it released footage of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya being fatally shot by an officer during a traffic stop April 4, according to WWMT-TV. The footage showed Lyoya exiting his car and attempting to flee from an officer during a traffic stop. After a lengthy struggle between the two, the officer pinned Lyoya to the ground and discharged his Taser. The officer is then heard screaming at Lyoya to “let go of the Taser” before pulling out his gun and shooting him.
Lyoya’s family members reportedly accused police of killing him “execution style," and several residents have called on city leaders, such as Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and City Manager Mark Washington, to resign, while others demanded that police scale back their tactics. The deadly traffic stop is still under investigation by Michigan state police to determine whether the shooting was justified, Washington told reporters Wednesday. The officer who shot Lyoya has been placed on administrative leave until further notice.The GRPD has not yet responded to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.
