Department of Justice agents have reportedly told Donald Trump he is a target in their investigation into the alleged mishandling of classified materials, a key step before filing charges in the case.
The move by Department of Justice agents under Special Counsel Jack Smith is the clearest signal yet the former president may be charged with a crime over the documents.
Some of those documents were only discovered following a raid by federal agents two months after lawyers for the former president said a diligent search had not produced any remaining materials. However, the NYT reported Trump declined to answer directly whether he had been told he was a target of the investigation, returning instead to his previous claim it was"not true" he would face charges.
